"I think you're lying. I think you're making that up," 9 year old Layla Ober, skinny and in pig tails and wearing an over-large t-shirt that belonged to her mother, spoke from the back seat of their runner where she was supposed to be sleeping. She wasn't. She had her arms wrapped tight around the raggedy stuffed elephant they'd found in a dilapidated toy store and was lying under a quilt her mother had made her when she was tiny. And she was frowning.

Giada, meanwhile, was laughing at her daughter's stubbornness.

"Why would I lie about Earth Before?" Giada says between chuckles. "I was the one that grew up there. You were born after--"

"After the tefra...fera...terraforming." Her trouble with that word won't end until she's ten, but God help her she is trying. "And anyway, it sounds gross and no one'd make anything that gross. Who'd want something that sticky and sugary?"

"Crazy people," Giada says with a grin. "Bubble gum was my favorite when I was your age. I liked the sticky-sweet."

"You liked weird things. You liked...you liked vampires and movies with monsters." Layla's voice isn't sleepy yet, just stubborn.

"You know what else I liked?" Giada asked, peeking into the back seat of their runner. She's waiting at the gate of a town, waiting for the E-Rep to check their vehicle so they can pull in and find somewhere to sleep. Why it's taking so long, Giada does not know.

"What else did you like?" Layla asks as she climbs into the front seat. Her elephant comes with her, thumped firmly on the seat next to her.

"Seatbelt."

"You liked seat-belts to eat?"

"Put your seat-belt on."

"What else did you like?"

Giada is silent as she thinks of food from Before, smiling softly.

"Ice cream. I loved ice cream. Couldn't get enough of it." She turns to look at her daughter and Layla's watching her with interest. "It was made from cow milk, and it was made into a very cold and soft substance. It was flavored with things like chocolate and fruit. I could eat it all day." Another look at Layla who is blinking softly, finger drawing a circle around the elephants eye. She's tired. And this is fascinating. So Giada keeps going. She tells her about the different flavors and the different ways to eat it. How it's great on hot waffles (which she already explained). The different ways it was turned into shakes and things like that.

By the time they got to the E-Rep check in station, Layla was already asleep.

Characters Played Here: Julie Grigio, Charlie McGee and Samantha Montgomery

Character: Layla Ober (Defiance OC)

World Description:

In the year 2013, a group of large space ships known as Arks arrived on Earth. They were carrying thousands upon thousands of various alien races, collectively known as Votan. Their solar system had perished in a stellar collision. Their technology detected no signs of life on Earth, so they planned on terraforming it. However, five thousand years after leaving home, the Votan discovered that Earth was in fact inhabited. The humans regarded the Votan with hostility and suspicion, but still tried to get some sort of agreement met so the Votan had a place to stay.

It never happened. Years spent trying to form treaties and laws and the like were filled with growing tension until finally, right when things were getting settled, a Votan leader was assassinated on live television on the steps of the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

This kicked off the Pale Wars in 2023.

At the culmination of the wars in 2030, the remaining Arks mysteriously exploded in an event called The Arkfall. It's not known whether the perpetrators were human or Votan. What is known is this set off a series of catastrophic events that changed the face of the Earth and the way of things permanently, for humans and Votans alike.

First, the deaths of thousands upon thousands of Votans that remained in stasis above.

Second, the terraforming technology on the Arks went wild. While they were meant to be used in carefully planned stages, the chaos of them activating so violently radically and horrifically changed the biosphere and even the geology of earth.

Whole towns, whole cities, even whole states and countries were destroyed, lost in chasms that ripped open or mountains that suddenly appeared. The animals on the Arks and the animals on earth mutated horrifically, creating new and dangerous breeds of creatures like the giant crustacean-like Hellbugs, creatures that act as ants and destroy anything they set their minds to. It also created hybrids of other animals like cows and pigs, and turned them into very useful and mildly delicious animals called 'pows.'

Not the finest dining ever, but fuck it. Food is food.

It also destroyed communication and long distance travel by air, the electromagnetic distortion caused by the terraformers creating too much of a dangerous mess to fly through.

The Pale Wars ended when Votan and Human alike realized they needed each other to survive the new Earth.

In 2046, fifteen years after the Pale Wars ended, humans and votans are struggling to rebuild. Everythings been reduced to a more savage, dark-ages-ish state. Long distance travel is still fucked, so is long-distance telecommunication. At most, text relays can be sent but it's more an electronic and heavily unreliable pony express. Messages take weeks to deliver from one radio station to another.

Character History:

Layla Ober was born to single mother and full time smuggler/scavenger Giada Ober in 2027, while the Pale Wars still raged on. The Obers were known as the people to go to when you needed something not commonly or easily or legally found and Layla grew up learning the family business. She knows a guy who might have that thing you need, all of her connections have been family connections since before she was born.

Considering the year in which Layla was born, this means she started life in the middle of the Pale Wars. This means she grew up knowing violence and destruction. It was a dangerous and difficult time for herself and her mother. Money wasn't that easy to come by at first and what money they had was spent carefully. This was about the time her mother stepped into the family business of smuggling, teaching her daughter everything she knew when Layla was old enough to return.

During this time, Layla and her mother, Giada, were smuggling items across the country when and where they could. It wasn't at all easy. In fact it was incredibly dangerous considering the war. But they managed. It was a living and when the wars died down, they settled in Defiance.

They chase Arkfall. They chase rare and illegal objects. They travel around what remained of the US, working hard and enjoying life as best as they could.

In 2044, Layla loses her mother to hellbugs. A few days later during a Razor Rain event (where pieces of Arks fall through the atmosphere. It's exactly as it sounds), she loses her lower right leg from the knee down. Shortly thereafter, she's fitted with one hell of an advanced prosthetic. The Indogene, the smartest race known to man and Votan alike, are medical and scientific geniuses and Layla's leg was built by one such Indogene known as Dr Ywell. It was paid for by a resident of Defiance and now, Layla works mainly for them out of gratitude.

It is almost fully articulated. It can bend at the ankle and acts as a normal leg, fully controlled by Layla's own nerves and bio-electric impulses. This has enabled her to continue her smuggling business with relative ease. The only parts on it that don't move all that much (because Layla really didn't care) are the toes. They move when she runs, but it's not something she can move on her own. It's also quite obviously a prosthetic. She turned down the offer to cover it in fake skin.

Months were spent in recovery, adapting to her new leg and getting used to it before she could continue working and now, even without her mother, Layla runs the family business. She keeps her connections, keeps the illegal and the rare items flowing and keeps herself busy in Defiance.

This is not an easy life. It is rough. It is violent and Layla is just as tough as the new world around her. It's what she grew up in and knows and it doesn't look to be changing any time soon

Personality:

Layla June Ober is a very loving, loyal and smart individual. She has a very vibrant, in your face kind of personality. She has absolutely no shame or fear of ridicule. She's the type of person to walk around her own house in bra and underwear, even with someone there. That being said, if someone were to point out to her that it's making them uncomfortable, she will put her clothes back on a bit begrudgingly.

Her loyalty isn't something she gives out freely. It really has to be earned. Life as a smuggler has taught her to be careful of her connections, to be careful of who owes her what and who she owes anything to. She won't enter into a deal lightly. And she won't make them if she doesn't think there's anything in it for her. There's no point, if she's not getting anything out of it.

Some of her contacts are like family to her, people she'd do anything for not out of a need to keep a deal, but because she genuinely cares.

She's also learned that some contacts are not worth keeping. Some of them have screwed her over one too many times and while she won't 'take care' of them herself, she has been known to call in favors to teach shaky contacts she's not to be messed with. This happens very rarely, however. She's more likely to kick the shit out of someone over a prime piece of Arkfall (an event that happens unpredictably where large and salvageable chunks of Ark fall and the tech inside can be taken out and sold for a decent bit of cash).

She's a fighter. Her world is rough and savage and she's just as rough and savage in return when she has to be. She knows her way around throwing knives and guns, is very well versed in the art of fist fighting and if it's a matter of survival, she will do what she can to take someone out.

Layla lives for the moment, considering the life span of people on earth. There are hellbugs to worry about, the Volge, raiders. All manner of things that can and will kill a person without thinking. She likes seeking out physical pleasures and is a frequent customer at the local bar/brothel the NeedWant. She has a favorite employee that she sees reguarly.

Why do you think your character would work in this setting? Layla is an accidental flux in. She won't handle it well at first, but will eventually sign. She'd be a bit taken by New Dodge. She'll like the fact that it seems to be thriving a bit better than Defiance, that things don't look slapped together out of what's available, and how people really seem to be working together instead of against each other to get this place up and running.

What will your character do for work? Paintball arena (because sure why not)

She frowns at the TC, muttering and swearing under her breath before sighing and looking off to her left at someone in the Saloon.
]

I hate this thing. I already hate it. Piece of shtako device that...what?

[ It's recording. Wonderful. Except not. She gives the TC a half-assed wave, a faint smile and; ]

Hi. I'm Layla and I just fluxed in. I'm from the city-state Defiance, previously called St Louis, in the year 2047. I don't expect to know anyone from home. That's...fine. I guess. I mean, if they're gonna flux me in or whatever the least they could do is...

[ And here we have a string of words in another language. Castithan. An alien language that she knows enough of to get by. But now, she realizes that the TC is still running so she stops herself, smiles apologetically and continues on. ]

Any-friggin-way. I need a job and a place to stay. If no one else has it, I want to run paintball. It's as close to relevant to my skill set as I can get.

[ So there. She simply fumbles with the TC some more, turning her end off and waiting for replies. ]
